I've forgotten who Ostoros even was. And I just read the thing not too long ago.
Basically, this entire series I felt I was in that noise-maze thing where I couldn't make heads or tails of it.

It was pretty clear that Ostoros was Springer... I thought...
And opposite to you, I wasn't sure of it on my first read, but after a reread liked it a lot more.
I put that down to me tending to scan through when I read things - this is certainly one where you need to pay close attention to the details.
