For ****s sake - saying someone is not a great role model is not the same as saying sedn him to eternal damnation is it? is it? no it isn't, is it?

Although that said cheasting on your wife, or anyone is a pretty damn low thing to do. Just bacause poeple do something doesn't lend it any positive credence.

if he was such a great talisman we would have actually won something or you could point to more than a handfull of games where he could be rightfully described as putting in an iconic performance or actually helped pick the team up when they weren't good enough. Can you really think of more than a few games where this is the case?

he was a largely tepid captian in a largely tepid era of English football, the resultss and the failure of the team to live up to the potential of its individual parts speaks for itself.

i don't particularly dislike Beckham but in the annals of English football history he will be rememberd more for his celebrity and club career than for what he did or England because, in teh final analysis, he along with teh rest of the squad he 'led' didn't do that much for England.

They had their chance- they blew it. I dearly wish it was otherwise but as i am not prone to swallowing tabloid bullcookies i find it hard to see it any other way.

Besty, the way I look at Steve M is that he is gash and on top of that has been licking Svenis' balls for the last 5 years.

Would you expect him to change much in the setup?

Can you see Downing playing over J. Cole in the future?

Would he drop players woefully underperforming (Lampard, Beckham)?

He played liked **** and doesn't deserve to be captain - instead of getting the C-role taken from him by McLaren, he gave it up (which is a smart move by Becks).
Lennon was way better than Becks.
Go Lennon!

if he does i will be suprised. The Eriksonn era may be over but i don't anticipate a signficianct change in approach. Maclaren has been involved in teh English set up as long as he has been a manager and his cautious approach seems to have been quite influenced by Svennis's.

I think he may be more likley to drop players but tactically i don't think he is particularly astute and i think he suffers from an inability to make effective changes in the heat of the moment, those two come backs in the UEFA cup aside.

I think Downing is more likley to remian a sub for the foreseeable although given the youth quality we have at boro i can see a few of our current youngsters featuring more prominantly in 2-4 tears time - Cattermole as a potential holding player for example, espeically with the Boat as a role model.

Still, at least we have an English manager eh? Hooray! How very important!

Hiddink you pricks.

Back to becks - in terms of being a role model.

Being England captain is far beyonf playing football tho, the press wont allow you to just be a football player, you have to be a figure head at the front of our maniac press. You have to represent our country alot of the time, be it the commonwelth games, or the Olympic votes etc... England captains are more then just football captains now. Should it be this way? no, of course not but for becks mistake in shagining some other women I dont belive it damms him as a person.

For everything else he has done, and I think hes done that well, for his conduct on the pitch which has been good, and for a form that yes has been average (but then so has the rest of the team) I feel in all he has been a good Captain in more ways then should be asked for him.

Im sure Becks knows he had the chance to win the WC this time, and that his carrear will never reach the highs he dreamed off but I dont think hes ever been a bad Captain on the pitch, average, and sometimes great. And I still belive he has recently been a good role model.

its good that you 'feel' and 'believe' that he has been good but i don't see much evidence on the pitch, bar, as already stated, the odd game when the rest of the team failed to show up. Maybe you could find a quote from an old book to bolster your arguement?

or is blind faith in something with little rational basis ok in this topic?

ok his goal against, greece, his goal against parguay, his goal against trindad etc.. without them we were either not in the WC or not going far.
thats football - like I said I think hes been average to good - and thats generally aswell as England ever play. so my 'feelings' seem fair to me.

Off the pithc, David represents England, and thats pretty much agreed that his image worldwide is second to none, its a good image, affair or no affair.
Why?
David does charity work, sets up footy-schools, helps out in other sporting events to represent us. hes a poster boy etc... and hes done it well.
So my feelings on him off the ptch are cool aswell.

Hes also supposedly inspirational to the England team according to what we know, and his experience is still good for younger players too.

Im pretty sure Gerrard would be the better player as a captain and perhaps Terry the better leader vocaly. But I dont think the England Captain job is just about playing football anymore, dont u think?

It's a picture of Ronaldo dicking around and being casually racist that I find amusing.

Yes, that I understood, and I too find it amusing.

I just can't understand why the [composite word including 'f*ck'] he would do such a thing when there's bound to be a million photografers around him :o

Racist, yes. Funny, yes.

Italy won!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last 3 minutes were incredible.

This happens when you have a coach that is not a coward and dares to put men in the offensive.

What the [composite word including 'f*ck'], I hadn't seen my lady in over a week, so yesterday I thought "[composite word including 'f*ck'] the stupid World Cup, the game'll be boring anyway" and watched a movie with her.

Now I'm hearing the game was awesome.

I watched the first 60 mins and then went to bed. Missed all the fun :(

But from what I saw, Italy was playing better.

Yeah, I was going for Germany too, if only to offset my Jewish roommate's fanatical devotion to rooting for anything NOT German.

I'm glad the Germans didn't win. They can't keep relying on shootouts to win games. ;)

So, Italy or France?
