X-Men Legacy has finished. Sadface. That was good.

But Spurrier's X-Force has started as well and that seems to be good as well. He's going to make Marrow fans out of all of us, isn't he?

I'm glad they've merged the X-Force titles. I'm sorry to see Hopeless' C&XF go, but I'll take the hit because Humphries' stuff was just dire. Full of good ideas, but bogged down in dross and awful dialogue.

Trial of Jean Grey is basically what I expected. Lots of standing around talking. Because it's Bendis. "She killed a star system!" "But she hasn't done it yet!" "But she will and we have proof!" "But it hasn't happened and she dies after anyway!" "But she's alive now and it can be stopped!"

But y'know what? Not bothered. Because it's ace. ANXMen has always been about characters reacting to situations, Hank reacting to Rocket Raccoon (don't say the R word) is ace. It's all ace. Even them bringing back [spoilers] is ace because we get to deal with the character stuff it throws up. I hope Vulcan saves the day, just for WTF value.

Iron Man is still good.

Mighty Avengers is good even if it is Greg Land.

Loki: Agent of Asgard #1 was totes awesomesauce.

Avengers has got a bit odd post-Infinity. Well, odder. Avengers World seems to be quite decent though.

Thor sagged a bit in the last arc. Went a bit Fellowship of the Hammer. But then the Gorr stuff was phenomenal, so there was always going to be a drop-off.

[And Warren Ellis is doing a Moon Knight series soon I can't wait for that it's Warren Ellis doing Moon Knight FFS]

And there's a load of Image stuff I still need to catch up on. Velvet and Black Science in the pile, plus a stash of Morning Glories. And a new Fatale trade.

I WILL BITCH ABOUT DARK CYBERTRON FIRST (BESTLY) AND THEN GIVE YOU MY BRAIN SQUIRTINGS ON THE THINGS OF OTHER

Dark Cybertron has been utter wank, a bloated, stumbling mess that has dragged down an excellent title and failed to elevate a mediocre one.

On a not quite similar note - Forever Evil - good to see DC utterly failing to learn from Marvel in terms of getting issues banged out with regularity

Not sure i really took to Spurrier's new X-Force title, it seemed a bit by the numbers to me, although i agree about the previous 2 titles. Bit jarring in terms of the previous 2 teams though there doesn't seem to be any real closure to, well certianly the reasons for Cable's last iteration getting together. Plus less Collosus is almost always bad.

Agree wholeheartedly on ANXMen - the last arc was maybe a little less great but overall is has been brilliant. And while there was a lot of Bendis chatter there was also some lovely Immomen Space-splode. And the ending - i love things that seem obvious as soon as they happen but i would never have predicted.

Also ace has been Spectacular Spider-man - i am really looking forward to seeing how it all wraps up. I liked the dynamic of knowing it can't go on forever but it going on for longer than everyone expected and the aftermath will be something to see.

Iron Man still good but not quite the verve of the opening arc.

Might Avengers is just really good fun. Shame they buggered up "Who is Ronin" but hey ho.

Thor agree on the last arc but the new one started fantastically - i love what Aaron is doing with the title.

New Wolverine seems a bit of a mess, which is a shame as the last stories were strong.

Sup Foes - hooked. Thank ye

Uncanny Avengers - last issue picked up significantly i think - Angry Thor is always good value.

Loki - concurrence, altho him not being Gillen fueled makes me a little wary.

Glad Nightcrawler is back - he is too awesome for death although the volume of X-titles and teams seems to be hitting critcial mass again

Revolutionary War has been a bit guff. The Kieron Gillen issue of Dark Angel aside. DH issue was rather dissapointing as DH just doesn't seem too bothered by DH2's existence

The new Ms Marvel title was whizz bang. Very nice indeed.

And finalyy, finally the first issue of the Serenity sequel was bliss. Totally spot on i thought. We have missed you Mal. And your flarey nostrels.

Hey guys, I need some recommendations for new comic books to read. Most the series I read, I'm waiting on new volumes of graphic novels to be published (I tend to read comics as graphic novels rather than monthlies), and need something inspired to fill the void.

FYI, I'm not a big fan of superhero comics, but enjoy Manga, Indie publications, plus series by IDW (of course!), Darkhorse, Image and Vertigo like:

The Manhattan Projects is very good but also very Hickman.

The Unwritten took me a couple of volumes to get into the swing of, but I think it's great stuff. Can get very meta, but in a good way. If you like Fables (which you do) and the Sandman then you'll probably enjoy it.

I'd also recommend Morning Glories (six trades available) and The Infinite Vacation (5 issues, one trade) both by Nick Spencer.
Revival is Image's "other" zombie book and takes a completely different approach.
Chew is marvellous.
Thief of Thieves is good fun caper stuff with a rotating writer crew (Spencer, Asmus, Diggle)
Snapshot (Andy Diggle and Jock) is definitely worth a look.

Also Bedlam by Nick Spencer is good if you can handle Riley Rossmo's art (and if you can, Cowboy Ninja Viking is also worth investigating, though both a bit superheroey in a subverted manner).

If you've got a strong stomach then Crossed by Garth Ennis (then David Lapham) is great stuff.

Locke & Key?
American Vampire by Scott Snyder.

If you get a chance to look at Ten Grand (JMS and Ben Templesmith) then I'd recommend at least giving it a flick through.

Anything by Ed Brubaker and Sean Phillips (Criminal, Incognito, Sleeper, Fatale) is usually a hit as far as I'm concerned.

I'll stop now or I could be here all day.

[EDIT] Oops. Should point out that Incognito and Sleeper are technically superhero stuff.

Also recommend Happy! by Grant Morrison and Darick Robertson. And also Casanova by Matt Fraction - a gloriously bats**t-mental comic that's basically what would happen if Morrison and Ellis had created James Bond.

Hey Brendo - wow! thanks very much for the thorough response.

Quite a few of those titles you've mentioned I've had a flick through so may be time to take the plunge!

I was particularly interested in Casanova, mainly because Gabriel Ba is such a solid artist. Fatale, Chew plus Locke & key are one's I've heard a whole lotta good things about. I'm a big fan of Templesmith's artwork so may have to give Ten Grand a glance over too.

Overall great suggestions - my wallets going to be stinging come Wednesday

Just have to chime in that Jason Aaron's Thor is bloody balls to the walls, just incredible stuff.
EXCEPT for that dang Malekith-arc... Obviously editorially demanded.

But the most recent issue with the return of the godly-sexy Ribic IMHO, returned the comic to form, with present Thor going up against RoXXon Oil and their CEO, some kind of fusion between Steve Jobs and the Devil himself, it would appear. Definitely worth picking up again, for those that may have lost faith in Aaron. ( I was close to it myself.)

Btw, Mr Tigg, have you tried Manhattan Projects? If so, what did you think?
If you liked that one, I actually have a Marvel-comic I would suggest, the perfect opening if one wants to try out the less overt superhero-projects they do, now and then - S.H.I.E.L.D(!)

It's basically Hickman's MAGNUM OPUS, the big one, that made him famous, and got him to where he is now. It's very Hickman, much like his Indie-work, and it doesn't really feature superheroes, even though it takes place in the Marvel Universe, and makes use of its rather wacky cosmology.
The best way to describe it is... Hickman remaking the entire MU in his image, without anyone noticing, while using historical Poly-math geniuses as rivaling pulp science-heroes.

If you only ever want to read one Marvel comic, then this is the one to read.

It made me worship the man on a Grant Morrison -esque level - IMHO, it solidified him as the only writer of his generation, that could one day reach those levels.

It's awesome, man...

( and it's also incomplete, as his bloody other work took prominence, so the last two issues have yet to come out. Second-last issue is all done tho', just that last book left... GAAAAH!)

It was a cool issue. And a LOT happened in the book. Lots of stuff got tied up. Lots of the "endgame" bits began falling into place. But, the thing that "everyone" (read: me) has been waiting took about 7 pages to happen. And it basically went like this.

Ghost Pete: I'm Peter Parker! And I'm going to get my body back!
Ock Pete: Here you go. You were way better than me, anyway. You just always held back. Save everyone. I disappear now.
Pete: Now to completely discard all the useful new advances that have been made in favor of charging into the Goblin War in a full-body spandex suit.

And if Pete was surprised at the existence of Parker Industries, that likely means he doesn't have a whole lot of knowledge of the current situation. Which means he's charging into the Goblin War blind. Ock deleted all of his own memories including those of being Spider-Man. So Pete doesn't know that Monster is his ex-girlfriend, the Goblin Knight is Urich, etc.

Then again, he seemed to remember where his old suit was (in a building he apparently didn't recognize as his own), so maybe Ock left him so knowledge on the way out.

I wouldn't say it was double sized, but it came with a epilogue and an add on Silver Surfer story and cost 5.99 instead of 3.99.

It was pretty good, I suppose. You get good servings of Peter having to deal with SpOck's status quos and Goblin's reaction is priceless. My main problems were that A) there wasn't a clear case made in terms of "Oh, THIS is why this situation needed Peter and not SpOck", B) Peter was relatively unfazed by SM2099 being around (but I guess there was a lot of stuff going on) and C) while there was a good serving, I hope this isn't the ONLY issue that deal's with Peter cleaning up SpOck's mess. Oh, and what about Anna? Yes, your boyfriend is alive, but I think you're going to get a Dear John letter.

And they listened to you, Smooth! Peter's usage of OckTech is highly essential at a decisive point.

I've been reading Batman (the new 52). I'm at issue 22 right now. This is the first comic that I've subscribed to (I've only read One-Shots, or whatever the hell you call them, like The Dark Knight Returns, Watchmen, The Killing Joke and stuff like that), and I'm really enjoying it. The relaunch felt like a nice way in for me, but it feels like I'm missing out on a ton of stuff since I don't subscribe to the billion other DC Comics, like Detective Comics, Batman and Robin, and the Justice League stuff.

Anyways... I'm probably gonna get up to date with the Bats comic, and then I'll see if I'll dive in to something. Let me know if you have any recommendations! Especially in the New 52 universe. This feels like a great opportunity for me to get in.

Probably gonna give Preacher a go as well. Started reading it a couple of years ago, but then just forgot about it

But let me know if you can recommend something like Preacher and Watchmen (stand alone stories that I can actually finish!)

Ok, that puts my toys and comic self indulgence into perspective.

Ob, stuff that stands alone well in my view;

Ongoings that stand on their own (i.e you don't need to buy any other stuff to know what is going on);
- Fables - it is ongoing but the trades are really nice and it only has the odd spin off which you can ignore.
- Invincible is similar (as i suppose is The Walking Dead but i never really got into it)
- Saga is like Star Wars with sex and swearing
- Superior Spider-Man runs to 32 issues which isn't bad at all
- The current Wonder Woman run
- Young Avengers

Self Contained
- Garth Ennis's 9 volume run on Punisher Max is immense and self contained.
- The Authority - Warren Ellis and Mark Millar - 5 volumes of goodness
- Nikolai Dante from 2000 AD has 9 or 10 volumes and is brilliant and again self contained.
- Sandman
- Grant Morrison's JLA run and his 2 volumes of all-star superman
- Wolverine: Old Man Logan
- Hulk: Planet Hulk and World War Hulk
- NEXTWAVE

That should do you for a bit - i am sure other's have suggestions as well

Criminal - five self contained trades by Brubaker and Phillips that can be read in any order
Sleeper - two "season" trades by the same creative team, set in the Wildstorm universe but standalone. Superhero spy-fi stuff.
Locke & Key - phenomenal horror-tinged series from IDW, written by Stephen King's son; six trades, only recently concluded
Chew - ongoing series, comedy about a cop who has taste-activated psychic abilities
Sex Criminals - ongoing by Matt Fraction. It's, er, a bit special.
American Vampire - ongoing Vertigo horror by Scott Snyder (current Batman writer)
DMZ - 12 volume story by Brian Wood with New York reimagined as a war zone.
Parker - Darwyn Cooke's sequence of adaptations of Richard Stark's novels for IDW. Corking.

Also second the bulk of the Bestinator's shouts. Worth noting that The Authority's recently been repackaged as two bigger type trades - one for the Ellis run, one for the Millar continuation.

Battle of the Atom was pretty good! Definitely the best X-over since Messiah Complex, and a lot of fun to watch the time travel clusterf*ck and see all the future X-Men.

I liked the Point One story for Silver Surfer and I did pick up #1 but haven't read it yet (I do that too often).

All-New is great, but does seem to be struggling a little for quite what to do with them post-BotA. Send em into space! Send em to the Ultimate universe! Almost as if they'll get in the way of the plot of the other book or something. Which is fair enough really, but it's the second time in three arcs and is feeling a bit transparent.

Still ace though so I shouldn't grumble. And if it shows Bendis has learnt how to better balance two coexisting teams after his Avengers run then all the gooder.

Simon Spurrier's X-Force has been brilliant so far though. Think the first trade was out this week. Fantomex and Marrow are quality and one day we will get a Spurrier-written Dr Nemesis solo book.

VERY excited to see if LaTour's Wolverine &TXM turns into a better book once Logan's dead. I had no ******* clue what was happening during that first arc. I'd switch to trades but I know that the moment I ditch and X-book there'll be a crossover announced within four issues.

Have enjoyed Original Sin by and large, but it's dragged on long enough now. Been some good twistage in it. The Iron Man/Hulk mini was fun.

I hated the first couple of issues of X-Force and dropped it. Fantomex is a bit of a mess of a character these days in my eyes.

Agree on W&TXM - most recent issue was good but before that seemed a bit of a time travel mess.

Original sin has been good - just a shame they let the release schedule slip for the last 3 issues of the main book - before that it was every 2 weeks like clockwork which i think really adds to an event, but only getting it right for the first half rather undoes the good work.
